Heworth and Barmby Moor put in dominant opening week performances in the Foss Evening Cricket League first division.
Heworth, last year’s runners-up, chased down Dunnington’s 86-4 total as Richard Walton (45 not out) and Yorkshire prospect Jack Leaning (39no) led the men from Elmpark Way to 89-0. Barmby Moor suggested last season’s high finish was no fluke with a nine-wicket victory over Stamford Bridge. Max Pimlott’s unbeaten 34 led Bridge to 77-4 in 18 overs, but Barmby were in a hurry to win as Johnny Taylor (32) and John Chaplin (29no) saw Moor home with 45 balls left.
Wheldrake were unable to raise a side so gave champions Woodhouse Grange two points.
Pocklington have re-entered the league in division two and opened with a strong performance against Melbourne. Alex Downey (74) and Greg Nesbitt (36) opened with an 85-run partnership as Pock posted 138-2. Huw Attwood took 4-20 as Melbourne closed on 99-9.
Heworth Colts slipped to 8-4 but recovered to 111-4 as skipper Pete Fairclough (65no) and Martin Boothroyd (38no) made the only century partnership of the night.
The Retreat’s Gareth Fenton (50no) and Phil Jackson (38) were parted at 99. But The Retreat still claimed an eight-wicket win.
There was a thrilling division three match at Stockton & Hopgrove where the hosts sneaked home by one wicket.
Thixendale posted 101-3 in 16 overs thanks to S Hood (37) and Nigel French (26). After a 52 opening partnership between Giles Smith (22) and Dan Fairclough (35), Stockton stuttered as S Abbott (4-27) and P Wooley (3-11) wreaked havoc.
An unbeaten ten from youngster Josh Barrett saw Stockton home with an over to spare.
