Heworth’s Martyn Boothroyd blitzed Pocklington on their return to division one of the Foss Evening Cricket League.
Boothroyd turned in an amazing spell of left-arm seam bowling to take 6-5 in four overs as Pock capitulated to 90-9, despite 58 from Ted Donkin. Heworth then won by ten wickets as Jack Leaning (56no) and Joel Johnson (33no) saw them home with 13 balls to spare.
Newcomers York laid down a marker, comfortably beating Dunnington by 68 runs. Simon Lambert (61) and Rob Love (32) helped the Clifton Parkers rattle up 150-5 in 16 overs.
Dunnington were well behind the rate as their reply closed at 82-4.
Champions Woodhouse Grange had Tom Quinn’s 81 to thank for posting an insurmountable total for Barmby Moor to chase. Andy Anderson (33) aided Quinn as Grange posted 128-3.
Barmby made 92-4 in response, with skipper Mike Newhouse (34) and Sean Houltham (33) in the runs.
Stamford Bridge kicked off the season with a victory against Londesborough Park. Sam Medley’s leg-breaks claimed 3-22 as Bridge posted 97-8.
James Beevers made 34 but Londesborough were 22 runs short as Tony Smith (2-7 from four overs) and Dave Craven (0-9 from four overs) were miserly.
Yapham, last season’s division two runners-up, picked up where they left off at promoted Westow. Matt Booth’s 68 not out saw Yapham make 141-3 to set up a 47-run victory as Westow made only 94-5 in reply.
The other promoted side, Stockton & Hopgrove, fared better in their opening match, beating debutants Bishopthorpe by 29 runs. Stockton made 135-9 while Bishopthorpe only managed 106-7.
Osbaldwick, another newcomer to the league, would have been happy with their opening salvo, making 124-6 against The Retreat thanks to Josh Cockerill’s 74 not out, and despite Salman Syed’s 3-19. However, an unbroken third-wicket partnership of 104 between Dinuk Mirando (57no) and Syed (38no) saw The Retreat claim victory by eight wickets with 16 balls to spare.
Melbourne condemned relegated Wheldrake to defeat by 11 runs. Oliver Steels (36) and Charlie Lambert (28) counteracted David Fearne’s 3-19 to see the boys from the MCG post 90-5.
In reply, Wheldrake fell short despite Anthony Carter’s 28.
Heworth Colts made it a club double as they beat Fulfordgate off the penultimate ball in division three. Fulfordgate made 140-5 with Mick Nelson (61no) and Steve Sissons (41no) in the runs. Jordan Edge’s maiden half-century (58) in a ton partnership with Greg Sykes (52no) saw the Colts side home by six wickets.
Dunnington Academy sneaked home by one run in another tight finish against York RI.
Johnny Andrew (50) and Eshan Maholtra (30) saw Dunnington to 130-3. The Railwaymen fell just short despite contributions from B Sellars (43), J Phillips (34no) and Steve Littlewood (26).
Ovington made a winning debut in the league against another newcomer in Retreat II. Ovington’s Alastair Souch took the second five-wicket bag on the opening night with 5-8 to bundle Retreat out for 75. Ovington were made to work for victory as Alastair Byers took 3-13, but the men from Little Knavesmire won by five wickets with only one over to spare.
