ALL-ROUNDER Jack Leaning starred for Heworth as they ended Woodhouse Grange’s unbeaten run in division one of the Foss Evening Cricket League.
The Yorkshire Academy and England Under-19 player returned to his home club and spearheaded a four-wicket win with bat and ball.
Leaning and skipper Simon Acomb both took three wickets to restrict Grange to 74-8 in 20 overs, with Ben Alport’s 16 not out the top score.
Teenager Leaning then led his side to victory with three overs to spare as he made an unbeaten 31 and Andrew Simpson hit 17.
York are now within a point of leaders Woodhouse after a 14-run win at Westow. Russ Bowry hit 73 – the highest score of the season – as he and Nick Stephens (43) took York to 145-7. Westow’s T Ostley (33) led the reply but 4-14 from Ryan Waite and 3-29 from Chris Burn left them short at 131-9.
Pocklington pulled themselves level with Westow on four points and cut beaten opponents Osbaldwick adrift at the bottom of the table.
Neal Jackson (68) and Alex Downey (32) led Pocklington to 132-3 before their bowlers were able to restrict Osbaldwick to 103-4 despite the best efforts of skipper Mike Hattee (54no) and all-rounder Drew Horner (31).
In division two, Matt Durkin’s all-round performance maintained leaders Stockton & Hopgrove’s unbeaten record.
Durkin took 3-30 to hold Bubwith to 123-5 before making an unbeaten 76 to lead his side home with an over to spare and six wickets still in hand. Stockton slipped to 54-4, but an unbeaten fifth-wicket stand of 70 between Durkin and Rich Kerrison (25no) proved the difference between the sides.
The Retreat’s six-wicket victory over second-placed Londesborough Park handed Stockton a three-point cushion over their title rivals. Greg Drewery and James Handley both made 29 as Londesborough posted 115-7. Salman Syed (44no) and Andy Northfield (30) then led The Retreat home with an over to spare.
The Nattrass brothers gave Yapham a narrow victory over Aviva Vikings. Jason Nattrass made 34 as Yapham posted 89-4 and brother Alex’s burst of 2-4 was then enough to leave Aviva six runs short at 83-6 despite the efforts of Ansuh (42) and Sunny Sharma (29).
Bishopthorpe claimed a 37-run victory over Thixendale. Ben Smith hit 54 in the first ten overs before Ian Holmes (35) carried on his good work to take the Bishops to 117-3. Matthew Riley was then Bishopthorpe’s best bowler with 3-18 as Thixendale fell well behind the rate, despite Robinson’s 46.
The wickets tumbled in clusters at Askham Bryan as Heworth Colts defended their 89 all out by 27 runs in division three thanks to Darren Harris’ amazing figures of 5-1 from four overs. Damien Grieg (4-17) and B Wood (3-32) had ripped through Heworth’s order.
Dunnington Academy lost their unbeaten record to Melbourne.
