RIVALS Woodhouse Grange and Sheriff Hutton Bridge clash in the Persimmon National Village Cricket Cup this weekend, with the final at Lord’s starting to come into view.
Grange, from Sutton-on-Derwent, who won the competition in 1995 and 2007, host Bridge, the 2005 winners, in the North Yorkshire (South) Area final on Sunday.
The fixture was rearranged after being washed out by rain last weekend.
“We will have a stronger team than we would have done last week,” said Jamie Hopper, captain of Sheriff Hutton Bridge.
“Most of the players haven’t played in a game like this before – it’s going to be a great experience.”
Grange captain Steve Burdett, whose side are top of the Hunters York & District Senior League premier division, said: “We haven’t played Sheriff Hutton Bridge for quite a few years, so they’re a bit of an unknown quantity.
“We’re treating it as just another game and are really looking forward to it.”
The winners of that local derby could face reigning champions Sessay, who play their North Yorkshire (North) Area final against Scarborough side Cloughton on Sunday.
The North and South Area final victors are scheduled to go head to head on Sunday, June 26 for a place in the last 16.
Sessay club secretary Keith Houlston said: “We have a league game tomorrow against Easingwold, which is our main focus, due to our poor league form this season.
“We are taking each game as it comes, and will be showing Cloughton the respect they deserve.”
