LEADERS Acomb were made to work hard for their two-wicket win at Driffield in division one of the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League.

Home batsman Mick Drury’s fine knock of 63 not out put Driffield in command when they took first innings.

However, the bowling of Simon Brown, who took 4-59 in another unbroken stint of 23 overs, aided by a return of 3-63 by Paul Hemmingway and 3-15 by Andy Coulsen, had Driffield all out for 163 in 45.3 overs.

Hemmingway then followed with 56 and Matt Dale made 32.

Adam Woolley (3-44) and Andy Chapman (3-16) kept the hosts in with a shout, but the cool and experienced head of Richard Sykes then saw Acomb to the winning post with an unbeaten 34.

The win came off the first ball of the extra overs.

Teenager Ashley Griffin turned in a splendid all-round performance for Harrogate as he claimed five wickets and made a half-century in a five-wicket victory at struggling Thirsk.

In Thirsk’s first use of the track, John Cook made 44 and Tom Stead 35, but Griffin’s 5-48 had the hosts all out for 146.

The youngster then hit 54 as he and Matt Ingram, with an unbeaten 54, saw Harrogate to a winning 147-5 to add fuel to their promotion ambitions.

Fenner improved their lowly status with a good three-wicket home victory over Heworth, who were dismissed for 110 as Luke Robinson took 3-41 and Ryan Kirk 3-3.

Yorkshire Academy and England Under-19s batsman Jack Leaning made 39 and Rich Walton 25 in a sixth-wicket stand of 38 before Kirk’s intervention saw the visitors lose their last five wickets for nine runs.

Fenner were reduced to 45-6 but were rescued by Jason Hellwig, who hit five fours and a six in making 30, and Joe Elliott (24no), who shared a seventh-wicket stand of 43 to ease Fenner to victory at 113-7.

Third-placed Sewerby trounced second-placed Hull Zingari.

Hull were whipped out for only 72 by Adrian Long (6-41) and Russ Robinson (4-27). Ben Dobson (28no) and Luke Jennison (27) then saw Sewerby coast to a nine-wicket win.
