Tim Bresnan is having a second operation on his troublesome right elbow in a bid to be fit for the start of a busy summer with both Yorkshire and England.
The all-rounder, who will be 28 later this month, is due to fly out to America to have surgery and rehab on an injury which has ruled him out of England’s current tour of New Zealand.
Having been back at Yorkshire this week doing some running with his county colleagues, Bresnan, above, could even travel to Barbados with them for their pre-season tour in mid-March depending on how his operation goes.
With Test series against New Zealand and Australia (twice) coming in the next 12 months, as well as the one-day Champions Trophy, Bresnan will be desperate to prove his fitness by helping the White Rose county make a flying start to the domestic campaign.
Bresnan had his first operation in late 2011 – ironically after a one-day series in India. He has just returned from a similar tour.
“He has been back in training with us just doing a little bit of running,” said Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale, also Bresnan’s brother-in-law.
“He’s going out to America in the next week or so, and he’ll be there for a week or two to have an operation and then some rehab on his elbow.
“He might then come to Barbados on pre-season or he might not. But he’s certainly going to have to prove his fitness if he’s going to get back in the England side for that first Test match (against New Zealand), which is in the first or second week of May.
“Hopefully we will see a bit of him early in the season. That will be a bonus.”
Bresnan played four County Championship matches for Yorkshire last season, and he could play in as many during the early part of this summer to prove his fitness ahead of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on May 16.
“At this point I’d say ‘yes, it probably is realistic for him to start the season’,” said Gale. “But I guess it all depends on how his trip to America goes.”
