Yorkshire were today pressing for a second successive championship victory after setting another new batting record on the final day against Derbyshire at Headingley.
Resuming 122 runs ahead on 597-5, Yorkshire added 80 in ten overs before declaring on 677-7 to eclipse their highest ever total against Derbyshire of 662 recorded at Chesterfield in 1898.
It was also their joint fourth highest championship total and the equal highest at Headingley and gave them a 202-run lead with a minimum of 84 overs to bowl out Derbyshire and follow up their dramatic win over Durham with another eventful triumph today.
Tim Bresnan made an early breakthrough, winning an lbw appeal against Billy Godleman in the third over with an inswinger, and then tempted Chesney Hughes into edging to second slip.
Their victory bid was given renewed momentum when Liam Plunkett had Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught behind in the final over before the interval, leaving Derbyshire struggling on 47-3 at lunch, still trailing by 155 with a minimum of 70 overs remaining.
