Younis Khan's last job before leaving home to join up with Yorkshire later today was to inform the Pakistan Cricket Board that he had rejected the offer to captain his country.

Younis said he was still under "immense strain" following the death of Bob Woolmer and Pakistan's shock exit from the World Cup.

Jostled by fans when he returned home from the Caribbean, Younis said: "I have always given 100 per cent for my country. But when your family get threatening calls and when effigies are burnt and our pictures put on donkeys then I can't lead the team in such circumstances."

The PCB had offered Younis the captaincy with full powers. Now he is pondering over whether to retire from the one-day international scene and concentrate on Test matches which he considers are "real cricket".
