New Yorkshire captain Darren Gough has made his first tough decision by omitting Matthew Hoggard from the squad for tomorrow's opening Friends Provident Trophy game against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

There is no doubt Hoggard (pictured left) will be disappointed because he had said before the season began that he was looking forward to playing one-day cricket for Yorkshire and trying to win back his England place at limited overs level.

Gough has replaced Hoggard with Deon Kruis, who was omitted from the Championship match at the Brit Oval, but he stressed Hoggard would be back next week for the Championship encounter with Durham at Headingley Carnegie.

"I want to be able to rotate my fast bowlers whenever possible and Matthew played for the MCC immediately before our game with Surrey," said Gough.

"Deon needs to get a match in but whatever happens next week, Matthew will certainly play against Durham."

Jacques Rudolph, a century-maker at the Oval this week, is expected to open the innings with Craig White (pictured right) whom Gough revealed is likely to bowl his off-spin in one-day cricket this summer.

Former captain White has now packed in fast bowling altogether because of his back problems but Gough believes he still has a useful role to play as an off-spinner when the occasion demands it.

Gough said 22-year-old left-arm spinner David Wainwright would have been strongly considered for tomorrow's match if he had not split the webbing on his bowling hand. However, he should not be sidelined for too long.

All-rounders Chris Gilbert and Richard Pyrah, and left-hander Andrew Gale are all included in a new-look squad which Yorkshire hope will bring to an end the club's appalling record in one-day cricket over the past couple of years.

Last year Yorkshire finished well down the table in the North Conference of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy (now Friends Provident) and they were bottom of the pile in the Second Division of the NatWest Pro40 League.
