Younus Khan calmly rapped out a century on his one-day debut as Yorkshire beat Nottinghamshire by 37 runs at Trent Bridge in the Friends Provident Trophy to continue their searing start to the season.

The Pakistan Test star was run out for exactly 100 off the final ball of the innings and Yorkshire's 280-4 gave Nottinghamshire too much to do and they were dismissed for 243.

The only upset for Yorkshire was that Deon Kruis had to limp off the field in mid-over with a hamstring injury late in the game after claiming three wickets.

After an indifferent Championship game at the Oval, Younus wasted little time in finding his form and his runs came off 92 balls with four fours and two sixes.

Yorkshire, without Anthony McGrath who was suffering from a chest infection, were put in to bat in testing conditions but Jacques Rudolph and Craig White coped well against some excellent bowling from former Tykes' left-armer Ryan Sidebottom, who found plenty of early movement.

Both openers timed the ball well while putting on 42 in 11 overs before Rudolph was run-out for 24 in a mix-up with his partner and when White had reached a similar score he was bowled by Paul Franks.

Wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy justified Yorkshire's faith in batting him at No 3 by playing some crisp boundary strokes in a 67 stand with Younus and he completed his first one-day half-century for the county off 51 balls with six fours before falling lbw to Mark Ealham for 53.

His dismissal brought in Andrew Gale and he and Younus batted out the remaining 23 overs together while putting on a commanding 153 for the fourth wicket. Gale ended unbeaten on 69 with three fours, just one run short of his best limited overs score, and like his partner he preferred steady accumulation rather than going for any big blows.

Darren Gough and Jason Gillespie both bowled tightly with the new ball, and Notts found themselves on 22-2 as Gillespie bowled Bilal Shafayat and Gough nipped one back to rattle Jason Gallian's stumps.

Notts staged a spirited recovery which began with a 65-stand between Mark Wagh and David Hussey and things were just starting to get out of control for Yorkshire when Hussey was out in a remarkable over from Kruis which had already cost 21 with three fours and a six, the Australian slapping a catch to White at short extra cover.

Wagh continued to bat attractively until bowled by Chris Gilbert for 56, and when Gilbert also had Samet Patel caught in the deep Notts were 159-5 and losing momentum.

Chris Read remained a threat but could find no-one to stay with him as Gough handled his bowlers skilfully. Read was last out for 68 when bowled by Tim Bresnan with 13 balls left.
