Adil Rashid once again led his Yorkshire team-mates off the field after yet another storming performance on the first day of the LV Championship match against Durham at Headingley Carnegie.

The 19-year-old leg-spinner grabbed 5-88 as Durham were sent back for 274 after winning the toss and it was yet another remarkable effort in Rashid's fledgling career.

This is only Rashid's seventh Championship match since making his debut against Middlesex at Scarborough in late August of last year and he has now claimed 37 wickets at 23.94 runs apiece.

This latest haul is bound to mean that England will be monitoring him even more closely, but Yorkshire's director of cricket Martyn Moxon warned against him being called up too soon.

"I think Adil needs to learn his trade in county cricket first," said Moxon. "He has a fantastic talent but at the moment he is a slim lad that we are trying to build up in order to play through a full English summer. We need to manage him carefully."

Yorkshire were particularly indebted to Rashid because they suffered a shock before the game started when their Australian paceman Jason Gillespie had to withdraw with a stiff back and his place was taken by Ajmal Shahzad.

Gillespie, due to have a pain-killing injection today, misses Sunday's match against Scotland in Edinburgh, but should be fit again in time for next week's Championship encounter with Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.

Shahzad bowled with impressive pace from the Kirkstall Lane end and fully deserved his maiden Championship wicket when he had Will Smith expertly taken by Tim Bresnan.

Smith and Michael Di Venuto gave Durham a solid start with an opening stand of 55 in 21 overs before Bresnan came on to have Di Venuto caught by the diving Gerard Brophy.

Rashid was introduced at 87-2 in 27 overs and in only his second over he had Gordon Muchall lbw. When Ben Harmison edged Darren Gough to Younus Khan at second slip Durham were 117-4 and it became 152-5 as Phil Mustard was deceived by Rashid's flighted delivery.

Fortunately for Durham, they were again well-served by captain Dale Benkenstein, who has built up a fantastic record against Yorkshire. He went to his half-century by driving Rashid high over long-off for six and he looked set for three figures until he drove the spinner to long-off where Jacques Rudolph held on.

Rashid then dismissed Callum Thorp with his next delivery and wrapped up the Durham innings by having Ottis Gibson caught at deep mid-wicket.

Bresnan bowled splendidly to finish with two wickets and when he finally got rid of Gareth Breese it gave him his 100th first-class wicket for Yorkshire.

Yorkshire soon lost Craig White, caught behind, and wicketkeeper Mustard pouched another catch to dismiss Rudolph.

Joe Sayers, dropped on three, stayed glued to the crease, making just eight from 87 deliveries by the close when Yorkshire were 50-2.
