Michael Vaughan had two main aims in mind at the start of Yorkshire's LV Championship encounter with Hampshire at the Rose Bowl today.

The England captain wanted to pile up some runs ahead of the Test series against the West Indies and at the same time help Yorkshire to win what promises to be one of their toughest matches of the season.

Yorkshire have made a dream start to their campaign with 100 per cent winning records in both the Championship and the Friends Provident Trophy but they are acutely aware that Hampshire completed the double over them for the first time last summer and that they remain one of the strongest teams on the county circuit.

In addition, Hampshire captain Shane Warne loves a good scrap and he will see it as a big challenge to overcome a Yorkshire side led by his old adversary Darren Gough and also having Vaughan in its ranks.

The thought of doing battle with Warne again will also get the adrenalin flowing in Gough and Vaughan and the England captain admitted he was looking forward to the contest.

"I felt in good form against Scotland at the weekend and will be trying my hardest to run up a big score in this game," said Vaughan.

"I am really enjoying the chance to play some matches for Yorkshire again but I am not bothered about being away from the pressures of captaining England," he added.

"Pressure is a part of that job and I have got used to it and enjoy it but what I am looking forward to is making a lot of runs for Yorkshire and taking some good batting form into the Test matches."

One Hampshire batsman who will be particularly determined to do well is left-hander Michael Lumb, who left Yorkshire after declining a new contract.
