Lancashire all-rounder Tom Smith had a day to remember to put Yorkshire under the cosh on the third day of the Roses clash at Headingley yesterday.

Smith, a former England under-19s and ECB Academy player, recorded a maiden LV= County Championship century in the morning session before taking four wickets to give the visitors a sniff of victory going into today’s final day.

Yorkshire were at least boosted by a crucial innings of 65 from Adil Rashid, who had earlier taken two wickets in the morning session to complete innings figures of 4-121 as the Red Rose declared at lunch on 416-9.

But the hosts closed the day on 199-8 from 63 overs, and are still 217 runs behind with Ajmal Shahzad (38 not out) and Steve Patterson at the crease.

“We’ve not had a good day,” said director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon. “It’s difficult to put our finger on why.”

Thanks to five early wickets for Smith and captain Glen Chapple, the White Rose had slumped to 55-5 in the 24th over.

Chapple forced Adam Lyth to chop on for a second ball duck before he trapped Anthony McGrath lbw to leave the hosts at 4-2 in the third over.

Smith (4-46 from 15) then claimed three wickets for four runs in 37 balls to leave the men from Old Trafford cock-a-hoop.

The 24-year-old trapped Joe Sayers lbw in his opening over, had Andrew Gale caught at second slip by Ashwell Prince and then had Jacques Rudolph caught behind by Luke Sutton for 30 in the 24th over of the innings.

Rashid and Jonny Bairstow then shared 68 in 19 overs for the sixth wicket to give Yorkshire some heart, but both fell in the evening session.

Yorkshire were forced to bowl part-time off-spinner Sayers for eight overs during the morning session due to their slow over-rate, and Smith took advantage.

Rashid got both Chapple and Kyle Hogg, who hit 37 in the midst of a ninth-wicket stand of 79 with Smith, stumped by Bairstow.

Moxon added: “We can’t be too hard on the guys because they’ve done so well so far this season.

“Smith batted well and bowled in good areas.

“He challenged us, and we weren’t good enough to combat him. All credit to him.”

Yorkshire’s Friends Provident Twenty20 overseas pair Clint McKay and Herschelle Gibbs both arrived at Headingley yesterday ahead of Thursday’s opener against Derbyshire.
