Yorkshire’s Friends Provident Twenty20 campaign got off to a disastrous start last night as they were smashed to all parts of Headingley by Loots Bosman, a man with strong links to the White Rose.
Bosman plays his club cricket in South Africa for Yorkshire – a club in Kimberley named after the late David Bairstow, who coached in the region during his playing career.
Bosman crashed 94 off 50 balls, including nine fours and six sixes, as he shared an explosive second-wicket partnership of 141 in 12 overs with young West Indian left-hander Chesney Hughes, who also added 65 off 41 balls.
Derbyshire’s 222-5 was the highest total scored against Yorkshire in Twenty20 cricket history, and the only positive for the home side was Clint McKay’s 4-33 from four overs on debut.
Fellow overseas player Herschelle Gibbs top-scored for the hosts with 36 off 26 balls in reply, but they could only muster 157 all out.
The Tykes, who face Worcestershire at New Road this evening, lost by 65 runs.
Australian pace bowler McKay took three wickets in four balls in the 18th over of Derbyshire’s innings, with the odd ball out being a wide.
Having picked up the wicket of Chris Rogers in the second over of the match, he later had Greg Smith (24) and Hughes caught at long on and long off respectively before getting Robin Peterson caught behind by Gerard Brophy.
But, unfortunately for Andrew Gale’s men, the damage had been done by 33-year-old right-hander Bosman, who is one of Derbyshire’s two overseas players for this competition, and Hughes. The pair hit ten sixes and 14 fours between them.
Jacques Rudolph got Yorkshire’s innings off to a flyer, reaching 30 off just eight balls thanks in the main to three sixes.
But Rudolph, Gale, who won the toss and invited the visitors to bat, and Anthony McGrath all departed in the third, fourth and fifth overs to leave the score at 53-3. Wes Durston, Tim Groenewald and Garry Park took the wickets.
Gibbs and Brophy then shared a fourth-wicket stand of 43 in five overs to keep the hosts up with the rate, but that was broken when the latter was stumped by Lee Goddard off Durston’s off-spin in the tenth over.
Jonny Bairstow then holed out to Durston in the deep off the bowling of Park before off-spinner Smith (3-19 from 2.5 overs) bowled Gibbs with his second ball to leave the score at 124-6 in the 14th.
Smith later bowled Rashid, while Peterson did the same to Rich Pyrah. McKay was run out, and the game was done and dusted when Rafiq holed out to Hughes on the long off boundary off Smith with 14 balls left.
