YORK-BASED Jonathan Bairstow has admitted that he will never forget his career-best 205 against Nottinghamshire.

The former St Peter’s School pupil was the star of the show on day two of Yorkshire’s LV=County Championship clash at Trent Bridge.

He had not even reached three-figures in the first-class game before but, after achieving the milestone, the talented 21-year-old attributed the innings to his Dunnington-based family.

Bairstow, the son of former Yorkshire and England wicketkeeper David, said: “I was delighted to get the hundred but, to go and make a double hundred, makes it really special and something I will never forget.

“It was brilliant to get it for my family and friends and obviously for my mum and sister.”

He also accepted that yesterday’s innings has taken some pressure off his shoulders, having passed the half-century mark on 17 occasions without going on to make three figures.

The 2008 Wisden Schools Young Cricketer of the Year’s innings is also unlikely to have gone unnoticed by the England selectors, who yesterday appointed two new captains as they look to the future.

However, Bairstow, who spent time with the England Lions earlier this year, insisted after his heroics that he is only concentrating on the here and now.

He added. “It’s important I keep my feet on the ground and concentrate on my next innings.

“I relished the time I spent away in the winter and I worked hard on my game. Right now I am just concentrating on each performance though.”
