David Wainwright has joined Derbyshire on a month’s loan after failing to break into the Yorkshire team on a regular basis.
The 26-year-old left-arm spinner follows in the footsteps of county colleague Azeem Rafiq, who also had a similar spell with the division two county earlier this summer.
He will provide cover for Derbyshire’s 18-year-old left-arm spinner Tom Knight, who has been called up to the England under-19s squad for their forthcoming one-day series against South Africa.
The deal does not take effect until this coming Saturday, and he could make his debut against Lancashire at Old Trafford in the Friends Life t20 match the following day.
Wainwright’s career has stalled since he was picked in the ECB Performance Programme and England Lions squads for their tours of South Africa and the United Arab Emirates during the winter of 2009/10.
The Pontefract-born player has only played six LV= County Championship matches during the last two seasons, including one this summer. He has played four Clydesdale Bank 40 and four t20 matches this term.
He suffered a knee injury last summer, complaining that it was a knock-on effect of his action being tinkered with by the England coaching staff.
Wainwright has only taken three wickets in competitive matches this summer.
“We are delighted the opportunity to sign David has presented itself, and I expect him to be integral for us during a crucial period of the season,” said Derbyshire coach Karl Krikken.
“Looking at David’s record and watching him bowl, it is clear he has all the attributes to be a very effective cricketer.
“A month of first-team cricket with Derbyshire will give him the opportunity to stake a claim. If he does that, everyone will win from this loan deal.”
Wainwright has been edged out of Yorkshire’s 20-over side by Rafiq, whose time with Derbyshire through April and May was a big success.
Yorkshire face a must win their t20 clash with second-placed Leicestershire at Grace Road tomorrow on the back of three North Division matches without a victory.
Anthony McGrath has been left out of the Leicestershire match. Joe Sayers will replace him in the squad.
Captain Andrew Gale will also have to do without all-rounder Tim Bresnan for the trip down the M1 after his call-up to the England one-day squad for their series against Sri Lanka, which starts at the Oval today.
Bresnan was not named in the original party due to the torn right calf muscle he suffered on the final day of the Championship match against Hampshire at Headingley last month.
But, having played a part in his county’s last two 20-over contests, he has received the call from the national selectors.
He missed the one-day series in Australia at the start of the year with the same problem before struggling again during the World Cup in India through February and March. It heightens the possibility of the 26-year-old playing in the second match at Headingley on Friday.
Bresnan’s availability for Yorkshire has enabled them to rest Ryan Sidebottom, who has been suffering from a nagging knee complaint, during the last week.
