Yorkshire’s hopes of winning a trophy this season are all but over after they lost by 76 runs in the Clydesdale Bank 40 at Sussex.
They realistically needed to win the Hove clash to keep alive any hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament.
But a fifth defeat in the competition means they remain third-bottom of the group ‘A’ table.
With the CB40 being the last piece of silverware the Tykes can win this summer, it looks like being another year of disappointment for Yorkshire followers.
Like so often this campaign, it was the county’s batting which let them down under lights on the south coast.
Set 247 to win, they were bowled out for 170. It meant a disappointing end to the match for Yorkshire, who had looked slight favourites at the halfway stage.a Sussex only posted 246-7 from their allotted time, despite being 108-2 after 20 overs, with David Wainwright and Adil Rashid the pick of a disciplined Tykes bowling attack.
Both the spinners ended up with two wickets, while opener Chris Nash top-scored for the Sharks with 79 and Ben Brown made a rapid 50 not out at the end.
This meant Yorkshire needed to score at just over six an over to win – but things started to go wrong almost immediately.
Captain Andrew Gale was first to go just four balls into the reply when he was harshly given out lbw for a duck.
Adam Lyth (33), Joe Sayers (25) and Gary Ballance (8) all departed soon after to leave the total 95-4.
Jacques Rudolph led a fightback to move the score on to 139 but when he was out trying to reverse sweep Michael Yardy for 35, the game was up.
It left Yorkshire five down, before York’s Jonny Bairstow was eventually last man out for 43 to hand Sussex an emphatic win in front of a crowd of nearly 5,000.
