Yorkshire have made an impressive start to their vital LV= County Championship match against bottom side Hampshire at the Rose Bowl today.

Captain Andrew Gale won the toss and elected to bat, and he has helped the visitors reach lunch at 101-1 from 34 overs.

Overseas opener Jacques Rudolph will resume this afternoon on 57 not out, his innings including seven fours and a slog-swept six off left-arm spinner Danny Briggs to bring up his fifty off 92 balls.

Joe Sayers, returning to the side in place of England Lions man Joe Root, was the only wicket to fall this morning, caught behind by Michael Bates off left-arm seamer Chris Wood, leaving the score at 20-1 in the 14th over.

Wood bowled seven maidens on the trot with the new ball, but the runs have flowed since.

The partnership between Rudolph and Gale, who has promoted himself up to number three, currently stands at 81 from 20 overs and one ball.

Both sides are playing two spinners. Hampshire duo Imran Tahir and Briggs have already bowled 14 overs between them. Gale will resume this afternoon on 28.
