YORK Cricket Club advanced to third position in the Yorkshire ECB Premier League with a seven-wicket home victory over Driffield on Bank Holiday Monday.

However, they were once again unable to claim the full points by bowling the opposition out.

York got a good start with a victim apiece for Nick Thornicroft and Colin Palmer, the latter grabbing the vital wicket of Yorkshire protg Andrew Gale.

But Mark Tennant and Ian Winterbottom batted comfortably and looked in control when York's sixth bowler, Dan Wilson, claimed Tennant in his first over with his off spin.

Shortly afterwards, Steve Piercy got in the act when Marcus Wood caught Andy Chapman and the pair went on to claim three wickets each and limit Driffield to 236 when a higher total had once seemed possible.

York had an ideal reply platform of 72 runs in 18 overs from Piercy and Dan Broadbent. The loss of Broadbent and Wilson had limited impact as Nick Kay looked to be a man in a hurry and struck an unbeaten 99 off 56 balls.

He only missed his century by taking a single instead of waiting for a boundary ball but he had already hit the fence 17 times including three clearances as York eased home at 237-3.
