RUNS machine Dan Wilson is back to shore up York Cricket Club’s misfiring batting.
The Australian, who set a huge scoring record last year, has returned to strike fear into the heart of bowling attacks across the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.
Initially, it was thought Wilson had left York for good at the end of last season – a campaign which saw him smack 1,542 runs – opting to stay in Queensland.
But the 25-year-old starts his fourth season at Clifton Park with a trip to Doncaster tomorrow, and club secretary Nick Kay is glad Wilson is back in the fold.
“We are chuffed to have him back,” he said.
“Our champion batsman is returning and he has been instrumental in our success of the last two years.”
While York are still unbeaten in the league, having seen their match against Rotherham washed out last week, Kay has been unhappy with the way the side has wielded the bat.
The club are hoping for improvement against Doncaster.
“We are not pleased with the batting performance,” he added.
“We have batted very poorly and it is our bowling and fielding that has seen us through.
“We have got a huge amount of work to do.”
On Doncaster, he added: “I know quite a few of their players and they have built a side around a good team spirit. They are like we were in 2001/2. They are a young side that sticks together.
“They will have to play very good cricket to maintain their league position (third) until September but they have started well and they are a definitely a top five side.”
