THE best is yet to come for York Cricket Club.
The Clifton Parkers look to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign at home against Harrogate in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier division tomorrow before starting their defence of the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy by entertaining Baildon on Sunday.
Club secretary Nick Kay says the traditionally slow starting York have got off to their best start to a season for seven or eight years, but still believes the side are playing somewhat short of their best.
Guarding against complacency will be their main priority against a Harrogate side who look sure to provide skipper Marcus Wood’s men with a tough test.
It is an unchanged team which will play Harrogate, after victory over Sheffield Collegiate last weekend, which means leading batsman Duncan Snell is likely to continue to take the new ball.
Peter Groves and James Wackett come into the team against Bradford League champions Baildon, with regular wicketkeeper Nigel Durham unavailable.
Kay said: “We have played seven and won six – with one abandoned.
“It is a good, steady start but we are not playing our best cricket. That’s going to sound strange as this is our best league start for seven or eight years.
“We have come out of the traps quite well, but there is much more to come. We have got to guard against over-confidence and we have got to guard against complacency.
“We have to get the basics right and our best cricket is still ahead of us.”
Kay admitted not knowing a great deal about Baildon, but stressed home advantage could be the key for both weekend matches.
“We are playing against our own foes in Harrogate,” he added. “They are a team we have grown up playing against and it is nice to come up against a good strong Harrogate side. We always enjoy that battle.
“I don’t know much about Baildon as a club but we always fancy ourselves at home. Clifton Park is a tough place for teams to come and get a result.”
