HIS side’s incredible unbeaten run in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League could stretch to 30 games tomorrow, but just don’t mention it to York Cricket Club skipper Marcus Wood.

The Clifton Park outfit have not lost a league fixture since their defeat at Harrogate in June 2009, with the first 15 games of the sequence helping them to seal a third successive championship.

The 14-game run at the start of this campaign has seen York move 14 points clear of their rivals as they eye a record fourth title on the trot.

Captain Wood may have cajoled and coaxed his men to that impressive feat, but he is loath to attach any significance to the statistics.

“I don’t like to look at it to be honest,” he said. “It could be tempting fate and you wouldn’t want to be complacent. It’s history.”

Third-placed Yorkshire Academy provide the first leg of a league double-header this weekend, and Wood is keen to concentrate on the challenge of beating the White Rose youngsters at Weetwood tomorrow.

“The Academy are having a very good season and they are always a difficult side to play against,” he said.

“We are expecting a very difficult fixture, but we are looking forward to it.”

Lowly Cleethorpes visit Clifton Park on Sunday, but Woods will be taking nothing for granted against the fourth-bottom side.

The North Lincolnshire side’s dangerman is undoubtedly New Zealand opener Peter Fulton, who has played ten Tests and 49 one-day internationals for the Kiwis. He is third in the league run-scoring charts with 721 so far.

“They have some good players in their side and are capable of an upset,” said Wood. “They have an overseas Test player and we will have to play well. There are 16 points at stake this weekend and it is important to start well tomorrow because that leads into Sunday.”

The possibility of any complacency creeping in is remote as York bid to bounce back from last Sunday’s ECB National Club Championship exit at home to West Indian Cavaliers.

That was their first defeat of the season in league and cup, but Wood said: “We went down fighting, which was important. The fielding and bowling performance was good.

“We have a very strong batting line-up that has performed throughout the season, but you are going to have times in a season when things don’t go your way.

“We need to make sure we are on our game tomorrow.”

Pace bowler Peter Groves, who took 7-45 against Rotherham Town last Saturday, misses the game with a side injury.

His place is taken by batsman Alex Collins, with all-rounder Duncan Snell taking over new ball bowling duties.

Snell will open the bowling with Tom Bartram, with prolific pair Tom Pringle and Daniel Woods providing the twin spin options.
