LEFT-ARMER Daniel Woods had Yorkshire Academy in a spin as York Cricket Club claimed their 13th win of the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League campaign.

Woods took 7-55 as the Academy closed on 172-9 in reply to York’s 197-8 in a reduced 47-over game, enabling the league leaders to take six points from an incomplete win.

York skipper Marcus Wood won the toss and, after rain delayed the start, openers Duncan Snell and Dan Wilson made a steady start against the pace bowling of Academy skipper John Blain and James Wainman.

In the tenth over, Wilson was out for 13 as a result of a smart catch by Heworth teenager Jack Leaning off Wainman’s bowling with the score on 24.

Simon Mason joined Snell and the second-wicket pair added 41 before Snell was bowled by Alex Lilley for 24.

At the halfway stage, Mason and Liam McKendry had taken the score on to 85-2, but with the score on 107 McKendry was caught behind for 13.

Alex Collins contributed six before he was run out, leaving Mason and Nick Kay to boost the scoring rate by adding 40 in 25 minutes. When Blain returned to the attack in the 43rd over, he accounted for Mason, who was caught at long off attempting a big hit. The in-form number three’s fine innings of 86 occupied two hours and seven minutes, during which he faced 96 balls and hit nine boundaries.

Wood made 16 before being bowled by Blain in the final over. Blain took 3-34 in 11 overs.

Blain opened the Academy reply but perished to a beauty from Snell with the second ball of his third over, edging to wicketkeeper Nigel Durham.

Tom Bartram won an lbw decision to get rid of opener Alex Lees for 22, with the score on 50 and 11 runs later Woods took a return catch to send back Irfan Amjad for 14.

Jack Hargreaves and Leaning added 89 runs for the fourth wicket in a little under an hour, taking the Academy’s score to the 150 mark, at which point the target was 48 off eight overs.

Two runs later, the partnership ended when Woods had Leaning lbw for 37. Seven runs after that Hargreaves went down the wicket to Woods, missed and Durham did the rest. Hargreaves’ 58 included six fours and two sixes. Lilley was bowled by Woods as he took three wickets for three runs in the over and York wrapped up a 25-run win.

Yesterday, York trounced Cleethorpes by 158 runs at Clifton Park.

Dan Wilson made 151, Simon Mason smashed 100 off 51 balls and Duncan Snell hit 62 in York’s 344-7 declared off 51 overs.

Cleethorpes were bowled out for 186, with Tom Pringle and Daniel Woods each taking four wickets.
