FOURTEEN wins, unbeaten in their last 31 matches at home, York Cricket Club might soon be looking at the prospect of going an entire season without defeat.

But skipper Marcus Wood and his men have a stiff test in the form of Doncaster Town CC at Clifton Park tomorrow as the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League enters its most important stage.

York’s 25-run victory over Yorkshire Academy and their demolition of Cleethorpes by 158 runs have put them 20 points clear of nearest rivals Barnsley – a healthy gap with ten games remaining.

With Simon Mason continuing to terrorise bowlers, and Australian Dan Wilson running into form with a superb 151 against Cleethorpes, the Shipton Road club are threatening to roll over their opposition.

Doncaster have won eight and lost seven so far this season, and club secretary Nick Kay reckons that, despite York’s stunning form, the South Yorkshire side will pose problems if not treated with respect.

“They lack a bit of consistency but they have the ability to win games they shouldn’t,” he said.

“They also have the ability to lose games they should be winning.

“We don’t really know what to expect but, if we play our best cricket, we will win the game. We have got a good run going at home which helps and our front four or five batsmen are in great form, along with winning hauls being taken by the bowlers.

“We couldn’t be more confident but we have to strike a balance between confidence and complacency.”

Kay added that while the aim of the whole side would now be to go through the campaign without a defeat, the club are well aware any slip-ups will be capitalised on by their rivals.

He added: “It’s a very tall order and it’s an aim of ours. But, looking at the league table, you only have to think like that and you can lose three or four on the bounce.

“It’s a cliché but it is one game at a time. We can’t afford to be complacent and there is no team in this league that we are going to take lightly.”
