YORK Cricket Club cruised to a nine-wicket victory over Doncaster Town in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League.

The start of the match at Town Field was delayed by rain for more than an hour, but York’s opening bowlers quickly put the hosts, who had won the toss, under pressure.

Jake Murphy (2-19) took the first two wickets to fall as the home side were reduced to 8-2 and Jonathan Moxon, at the other end, conceded only six runs from his seven overs.

Doncaster only briefly threatened to recover as Felix Odell (28) and Shahid Khan (16) put on 43 for the third wicket. The former chipped a catch to Duncan Snell to give Tom Pringle (3-15) the first of his three wickets.

From then on the visitors’ spin pairing of Pringle and Dan Woods (4-30) blew away the rest of the innings. When the last batsman was run out with the total on 87 the last seven wickets had fallen for the addition of only 36 runs.

York’s reply got off to a flying start as opener Snell (53) found the boundary with two cover drives in the opening over. In partnership with Liam McKendry (29no), he took the score past 50. The landmark was brought up with a six from Snell, in an over that saw him take 16 runs from Odell.

Another boundary, the York opener’s ninth of his innings, marked his half- century and when he was out McKendry and Andy Tute (9no) guided York home in under 17 overs.

The victory saw York take over at the top of the table.

York’s game at Gateshead Fell in round one of the ECB National Club Championship was rained off yesterday.

The fixture has been rearranged for Sunday, May 22.
