York Cricket Club continued their winning ways – a 162-run victory at hosts Sheffield United keeping the Clifton Park club on top of the Solly Sports ECB Yorkshire Premier League table.

Left-arm spinner Dan Woods was the star turn with figures of 7-60.

York’s batsmen had to cope with strong winds, and dust clouds having been put in to bat against a Sheffield United side which contained eight players under the age of 20.

Despite the loss of an early wicket the visitors made their experience tell.

Second-wicket pair Liam McKendry (76) and Andy Tute (57) put on 123. Both looked well set until with the score on 151 Tute edged a catch to gully and three balls later McKendry lobbed a simple catch into the legside.

But momentum stayed with the batting side. Alex Collins (36 from 29 balls) and Oliver Hairs (37 from 32) took full advantage of the home side’s inexperienced attack, both regularly finding the boundary and adding 68 in just nine overs.

Collins was caught out on the boundary at 219-4 when Reece Shutt (5-70) had Hairs caught behind in the next over.

As York’s lower order failed to fire, Nick Kay (35) guided the score to 290 before being the penultimate wicket to fall. Just one more run was added.

The Sheffield United response began poorly and never recovered.

Jake Murphy (2-29) shared the new ball with spinner Woods and the pair, aided by a two catches each for Tute and Tom Pringle, removed half the home side inside the first 12 overs. Grant Johnson (25) and Reece Shutt (22) offered resistance but both fell to Woods.

Oliver Laws (25) too the home side beyond 100 but Woods brought down the curtain on the innings at 129, the left-arm spinner having bowled unchanged from start to finish.

Next weekend sees York CC in League action twice on Saturday at home to Scarborough and on Bank Holiday Monday at Castleford, both with a noon start.

Between the two they are in ECB YPL 20/20 action as they join Scarborough at Driffield the sides all competing for a place on finals day later in the year.

• YORK CC exited the National Knockout Cup yesterday at Chester-le-Street. Limiting their hosts to 214-9, Duncan Snell and Liam McKendry put on 108 before a batting collapse left them 32 runs short of their target.
