A second successive seven-wicket haul by York Cricket Club spinner Dan Woods sealed victory for his side over North Yorkshire rivals Scarborough in the Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB Premier League.

This time, Woods’ match-winning performance was against a much more experienced batting line-up than against Sheffield United last week.

York went into Saturday’s game at Clifton Park determined to put behind them the disappointment of last weekend’s National Cup exit.

Oliver Hairs returned to the side adding to an already strong batting line-up.

Having chosen to bat, the hosts got off to a steady start before Andy Simpson (3-46) struck with three quick wickets for the visitors.

Liam McKendry (23) edged a catch to slip, then two wickets in successive balls in his next over reduced the home side to 43-3.

Oliver Hairs (45) joined Duncan Snell (72) at the crease, and the pair set about repairing the damage caused by Simpson.

Hairs runs’, containing eight fours, came off just 35 balls as he and Snell added 79 in 12 overs. His innings was ended when he sent a return catch to bowler Ashley Lyth.

Visiting spinner Sam Tennant (2-97) picked up the next two wickets.

His second victim was Snell, but not before the opener had made his fifth half-century of the season and his highest score of the current campaign. With the score then 160-6 Scarborough looked to be on top.

But skipper Marcus Wood (45no) and Tom Pringle (59no) seized the initiative back for the home side.

They added an unbroken 105 for the seventh wicket, their opponents unable to find a response to the pair’s fine stroke-play and aggressive running. Pringle’s 50 came up off 41 balls, with five fours and two sixes, as York posted a commanding 265-6.

Scarborough’s openers Andy Simpson (50) and Dan Harland (13) came into the match having already scored more than over 750 runs between them this season.

It was vital York struck early before they got settled. Woods obliged finding the edge of Harland’s bat and Andy Tute at slip making no mistake.

The score fell to 34-1 when wicket-keeper Nigel Durham was the catcher as Woods again found the edge.

Simpson and Mark Tennant (19) added 50 before Woods claimed his third victim and then fellow spinner Tom Pringle chipped in with the wicket of Tennant.

The visitors’ middle order had no answer to the spin pairing and the innings lost momentum.

Wickets fell regularly as batsmen got out trying to force the pace.

After Kunwar Bansil’s watchful 26 came to an end at 150-7, the arrival of skipper Piet Rinke (54 no) offered some possibility of chasing down the total.

His eight fours and a six gave some hope of a thrilling chase but with no support his was a lone crusade. A fine catch by Alex Collins running at full speed around the boundary gave Woods his seventh wicket.

The match ended with all ten fielders clustered around the bat, as Woods tried to add the final two wickets to close out the innings.

Unable to manage it, the visitors finished on 221-8 and York had to settle for six points rather than eight.
