YORK Cricket Club’s progress in the ECB National Club Championship may hinge on the toss of a coin.

Following two wash-outs, the Clifton Parkers will make a third, and final, attempt to stage their regional final against Blaydon on Sunday, and a bowl-out or a coin toss will decide the result if matters can’t be settled out in the middle.

The weather forecast currently looks bright for Sunday, which will please a York outfit who have been at the mercy of the rain as they bid for a sixth successive Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League title.

Last weekend’s clash with table-topping Harrogate fell victim, and tomorrow’s home game against Cleethorpes could again be disrupted with showers forecast.

Sitting 19 points adrift of the leaders, York, now in sixth, desperately need to play some cricket.

“The last league game we played was at the start of June so it has been four Saturdays since we played a league game,” said vice-captain Nick Kay.

“It’s been three weeks since we played any cricket at all.

“It feels like the start of the season again and we are raring to go. Rotherham were able to play last week and we are now languishing in sixth place in the league. We have a lot of catching up to do.”

On the prospect of a bowl-out or a coin toss against Blaydon, Kay added: “We desperately want to avoid that but there has to be a result. Hopefully, it will be third time lucky.

“The weather over the last two weekends has been abysmal but that has to change.

“Clifton Park is a good drying ground and our anticipation of playing any sort of cricket has risen as a result of this break.”

Andrew Tute is the only change in the squads between Saturday and Sunday – with the batsman unable to play in the Blaydon game. Coming into a 13-man squad for that encounter are Marcus Wood, Carl Blundell and Charlie Elliot.
