YORK will host Derbyshire side Ockbrook & Borrowash in round five of the ECB National Club Championship after knocking out Blaydon by 34 runs in the regional final.

Solly Sports Yorkshire ECB County Premier League champions York will host the Derbyshire Premier Leaguers at Clifton Park on Sunday, starting at 1pm, after beating visitors Blaydon at the third attempt.

York skipper Dan Woods won the toss and chose to bat first, with openers Liam McKendry (19) and Duncan Snell (50) getting the innings off to a bright start.

In the face of some hostile pace bowling, both players were watchful but also keen to take advantage of any scoring opportunities.

Their opening partnership of 48 from ten overs set a solid base, with Snell in particular making the most of the unguarded boundaries with six fours.

Benjamin Raine struck the first blow, trapping McKendry lbw with a ball that skidded on, and followed that up with the wicket of Oliver Hairs, the first of three catches for ’keeper Peter Howells.

Snell brought up his 50 from 60 balls when he angled the ball down to third man for his ninth boundary. He was out in the same over, edging Craig Simpson through to Howells to leave the hosts on 92-3.

Opposing captain Graeme Bridge came on to bowl his off-spin and that move seemed to suit Ryan McKendry (23) who, promoted to bat at number five, continued his good form of late with 16 of his first 18 runs coming in boundaries.

York looked on course for a sizeable total at 127-4 when McKendry edged Bridge to Allan Worthy at slip.

That sparked a collapse which saw five wickets fall for only 18 runs. Four of them went to Bridge, who finished his nine overs with figures of 5-21.

His final victim, Alex Collins, was caught at slip having made a patient 31.

It was left to York’s final pair of Woods and Glen Richmond to try to salvage something from the final eight overs of the innings, a feat they managed with a mixture of placement and good running yielding 29 valuable runs. Woods holed out in the deep off the final ball of the last over giving Raine figures of 3-30 and York a total of 174.

Richmond followed his batting effort with the early wicket of Paul Freary, Snell taking an excellent over the shoulder catch running back at cover.

Raine (48) played the anchor role and at 75-2 the visitors looked to be on course for victory.

In a mirror image of the first innings, it was the introduction of a skipper bowling spin that turned the game.

York captain Woods had Mark Drake caught at mid-off in his first over, Oliver Hairs then trapped Bridge lbw for nought in his opening over.

When Tom Pringle’s excellent pick up and throw produced a run out, three wickets had fallen for 11 runs.

Wicketkeeper Steve Crossley’s juggling catch off Hairs ended Raine’s resistence and with it any real hope the visitors had of reaching their target.

The ’keeper also made two stumpings as the innings tailed away, the second of which brought an end to the game leaving Woods with figures of 3-16 from 6.4 overs.
