ASKHAM Bryan pulled off a surprise victory in the first round of the HPH Cup with a brilliant all-round bowling performance against Bishopthorpe.

Vale Cricket League first division outfit Bishopthorpe were skittled for just 97 in 29 overs, Pete Wood and Chris Copeland each taking three wickets for second division Askham, who had posted 163-9 after being 82-5, the recovery being led by Parag Mohite (31).

Another top-flight side to come a cropper on a blisteringly hot afternoon were Clifton Alliance who lost at Fulfordgate by three wickets.

Dave Baldock’s 3-25 helped restrict the visitors to 163-8. In reply, Paul Whitley made 57 before becoming one of Simon Cook’s five victims but Gate dug in to win with a couple of overs to spare.

Holders Barmby Moor were beaten by University of York Staff, whose win was based on a third-wicket stand of 104 between Salman Syed (86) and Nomi Ahmed (46).

A brilliant maiden century by 15-year-old Ryan Partington (109) saw Copmanthorpe post an unbeatable 245-9 against Kelfield.

He was nearly joined in the ton stakes by Hemingbrough’s Tom Collins who fell for 99 to Dinuk Mirando (5-66) in an 81-run win against Ben Johnson.

James Rouse smacked an unbeaten 83 to guide Wheldrake to victory with 11.1 overs to spare after Chris Walker (5-53) restricted Westow to 166-9.

An unbroken partnership of 117 between Graham Parker (66no) and Ed Clark (65no) gave Burn a simple nine-wicket win against North Duffield.

Chasing 165 for victory, Thorpe Willoughby recovered from 98-8 to beat Hirst Courtney by two wickets, thanks to Martin Cook’s rapid 44 which turned their Scothern Construction Cup tie on its head.

Dave Kerrison (72) and paceman Matt Bradshaw (4-14) saw Stockton & Hopgrove rout Copmanthorpe II.

An unbeaten half-century by youngster Alex Bowden set up Selby’s win at Thixendale and veteran John Latimer’s 5-19 proved crucial in Bishopthorpe II’s last over win against Acomb.

Dave Brummitt’s outstanding 5-9 earned Ovington the win against Woodhouse Grange.

Jon Latham (62) and Gary Walker (5-25) shone as York RI turned over Burton Salmon in the Premier Sports Cup.

Heworth II bowler Michael Barratt saw his first delivery hit for four by Burn II but went on to produce figures of 10-3-18-4 as his team won by 52 runs.

York junior Matt Swaddle harvested 11 boundaries in his 74 against Pocklington but all-rounder Chris Saltmer (51 and 4-39) gave Pock the edge.

Despite a match-best score of 86 not out from opener Mick Cowling, Tadcaster Magnet lost to Malton & Old Malton.
