Burn reached the final of the York Vale Cricket League’s HPH Cup with an 81-run win against North Cave.

Burn won the toss, losing an early wicket before R Adamson (31) and T Rich (19) took the score to 45.

All the remaining Burn batsmen chipped in with runs before the innings closed on 186-9. J Tomlinson (4-43) and C Hewson (2-21) were the top bowlers.

In reply, Cave lost Page in the first over before James Ferguson (28) and Craig Hewson (34) fought back. However, the Burn bowlers took wickets at regular intervals, M Smith (3-38) being the pick of them, as Cave were all out for 106.

Division one leaders Hemingbrough nearly came a cropper at division two side Fulfordgate.

Electing to bat first on a wicket of variable bounce that cut up from the start, wickets fell quickly. At 32-3, things looked bad but Matthew Milburn (56) kept a calm head and steered ’Brough to a total of 131.

Fulfordgate, giantkillers from the last round, set off like a train and were 45-1 after 13 overs. They were later 103-2 after 26 overs, but then things began to fall apart.

Good catching and tight bowling from 15-year-old Tom Shepherd (1-14) and Glen Crouch (3-29) took its toll on the home side.

Gate went from 106-2 to 132-9 in eight overs.

The final between Burn and Hemingbrough will be played at Heworth Cricket Club on Sunday, August 1.
