SELBY Town manager Ian Dring has warned relegation rivals Yorkshire Amateur to “watch out”, writes Oscar Pearson.
The Robins side beat Amateur 4-1 on Saturday to bring their 15-game winless streak to a close in Northern Counties East League division one.
Dring said: “We’re chasing them – I said that to their manager Wayne Noteman after the game. I told him to watch out!”
Dring had described the Flaxley Road encounter as a must-win before kick-off, and his side delivered emphatically.
The victory ends Selby’s eight-match losing run, and Dring was understandably thrilled.
“It’s a relief, but to be honest I was 95 per cent sure we would beat them before we even started because of the players we had on the pitch and the positivity in the squad.”
Selby went close to holding out for a first clean sheet of the season, but a late consolation from Glenroy Hilton denied them that extra joy.
“We were so solid at the back and that one mistake at the end cost us,” said Dring.
“It should have been a clean sheet and their goal really annoyed me.
“We were 4-0 up and shouldn’t have let one in. But we got the three points and it’s probably me just being pedantic.
“We’ll take the win and press on. I’m very confident now, but we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground.”
The Robins remain bottom of division one but have four games in hand on Yorkshire Amateur, who are 11 points and one place above them.
Dring is keen to take advantage of his upcoming fixtures.
“With our games in hand, we’re definitely looking to capitalise,” he said.
“We’ve got Danny Gray in from Tadcaster. He’s a premier division striker playing in division one.
“It’s not just Danny, but all our new players dropped straight in and were really solid. They all performed well.
“Jack Wooley is a quality player. I really think he’ll be picked up by a club. He’s only 18 and to be able to slot him in behind Danny Gray is great.”
This Saturday, Selby travel south to Sheffield as they face an in-form Hallam side currently on a ten-match unbeaten run.
“Hallam haven’t lost for ten games but we can be their stumbling point,” said Dring. “It’s not the journey down to Sheffield that’s worrying me, it’s that they’re on such a good run.
“But I’ve been waiting for this week in all honesty. We’ve got the players we’ve been lacking, and it’s all down to the performances now.
“I’m confident that we can win our upcoming games, and we have two at home after our trip to Hallam. I know we’re going to get out of the situation we’re in.”
