YORK St John climbed out of the York Minster Engineering Football League premier division relegation zone after a 2-1 win at fellow strugglers Selby RSSC, writes Terry Todd.
The students’ win, which virtually relegated anchor club Hamilton Panthers, was achieved with goals from Daniel Tingay and Rob Gumbley. Matty Howden was the RSSC scorer.
York RI recorded their first draw in 65 matches as they surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Poppleton. All the goals came in the final 14 minutes, with Lee Powell seeing his brace cancelled out by Pop’s Richard Moss and Alex Janes.
John Cooper hit a hat-trick for Strensall in a 5-1 home win over Cliffe in division two. Jack Wilson and Mick Pipe also netted.
Dringhouses trailed 3-1 to visitors Haxby with 20 minutes left in their reserve ‘A’ fixture, but turned it around to win 6-3. The ’Houses goals came from Tom Hawksby, Neil Ducey (2), George Bissett and Will Pepper, plus an own goal.
Andy Carter (2) and Billy Ross responded for Haxby.
Danny Leach hit a hat-trick – including a last-minute winner – as Copmanthorpe won 3-2 at Huntington. Chris Holmes and Lee Bunce shared the home goals.
Fulford United pushed their unbeaten run into double figures in reserve ‘B’ with a 4-1 win over Amotherby & Swinton.
Fulford are second in the table, but an Easingwold win over York St John will deny them promotion.
A win for the students would relegate Amotherby.
Sam Harrison hit all Fulford’s goals, with Matty Bean replying.
Selby RSSC were promoted from reserve ‘C’ without kicking a ball as rivals Stamford Bridge were beaten 1-0 at home by Rowntrees.
Tockwith eased their relegation worries with a 3-1 win at Hemingbrough.
