The big shock of the day in the York Minster Engineering Football League premier division came at York RI, who defeated Huntington Rovers 6-5 in a thriller.

The reverse – sparked by a superb late comeback by the hosts – marked the end of a rousing run of victories for Huntington that stretched back to the first weekend of November and had seen them climb as high as second in the table. RI led early on but after 11 minutes Neale Holmes fired in an equaliser.

RI then scored again to take a 2-1 half-time lead but second-half goals from Chris Dyson, Gary Newton (penalty) and Lee Bunce saw Rovers apparently cruising to victory.

However, four goals from RI in the last half-hour, split either side of a Dyson effort, saw RI snatch a late victory and add to their impressive win at Dringhouses last week.

The Institute plunder was shared between Liam Keenaghan (2), Ben Jones (2), Craig Atkinson and Lee Powell.

Title favourites Riccall United completed a solid 4-0 victory at St Clement’s.

Gary Collier and Wayne Brook gave the visitors a 2-0 half time lead before Gaz Roberts and Michael Braithwaite completed the scoring in the second half. Riccall are now two points shy of leaders Old Malton but with three games in hand.

Terrington Glory defeated Poppleton United 5-0 thanks to a Tom Paley hat-trick and goals from Johnny Brown and Alan Goforth.

Mark Woodward also hit a hat-trick as Dringhouses triumphed 4-2 at Easingwold.

Tom Hawksby notched Dringhouses’ fourth with Scott Dixon and David Adams scoring for the hosts.

Wigginton looked set to extend their run of score draws to eight but a late winner from Josh Luckhurst saw them emerge as 2-1 winners at Aviva.

In a game that saw many chances at both ends, the outstanding performance came from the hosts’ goalkeeper Dan Cowton who made several outstanding saves including one to keep out a well-taken penalty.

It took until the 70th minute for Wigginton to break the deadlock with substitute Lee McQuade finding the net.

Aviva responded quickly and Lee Downham, also off the bench, raced away from the Wiggy defence to slot the ball home. Luckhurst then raced onto a Matt Tiplady cross to fire home the winner two minutes from time.

The top three sides in division one all recorded victories to keep promotion hopes alive.

Leaders Tadcaster Magnets gained a 3-1 win at Malton and Norton thanks to Philip Smith, Gavin Evans and an own goal. Ed Marwood replied.

Second-placed Osbaldwick were made to work hard for their three points at Tockwith but finally secured a 3-2 victory with Nick Lawrie’s 78th-minute winner.

Chris Bilton had scored two in the first half, including a spectacular free-kick, to give Osbaldwick a commanding advantage before goals from Graham Hutchinson and David Girling pulled the home side level.

Hamilton Panthers enjoyed a 7-1 win over Total Sports with Darren Brandon bagging an impressive hat-trick. Kevin Butler also notched a brace with Paul King and debutant Lee Topping completing the tally. Ben Brannigan hit Sports’ reply.

Rawcliffe hammered home their division two title intentions with a 5-1 defeat of closest rivals F1 Racing. Clinical finishing was amply demonstrated by Johnny Moss, Simon Wilson, Louis Howarth (2) and Fraser Shields.

The only bright spot for F1 was a last-minute goal for debutant Danny Penrose.

Cliffe defeated visitors Strensall 5-1. Luke Durham and Tom Robinson gave the home side a 2-0 lead at the half-way stage before two goals in quick succession from Lee Carter doubled their advantage.

Joe Davison pulled one back for Strensall before Wes Pears fired in a free-kick for Cliffe.
