THE Holmes brothers sent last season’s beaten finalists, Skelton, into the semi-finals of this year’s York FA Sunday Morning Senior Cup.
Many of the York FA cup ties played on Sunday were affected by waterlogged grounds, with about half of the games being cancelled. But Skelton were not unduly affected.
They fell behind when Mark Benton’s 25-yard shot put Acomb Celtic into the lead, but Neil Holmes levelled the scores by half-time, finishing off a team move.
Early in the second half, brother Chris shot Skelton ahead and then Neil increased the lead following a corner. A 20-yard volley completed Neil’s hat-trick and, although Joe Woof netted a 20-yard free-kick for Celtic, Skelton finished the game 4-2 victors.
Enterprise had a deserved win against Derwent United.
They went ahead in spectacular style when Danny Penrose lobbed the Derwent ’keeper from the touchline near half-way, and they doubled their lead with a left-footed volley from Steve Whelerton before half-time.
Derwent reduced the arrears following a poor clearance, but it finished 2-1.
Wanderers had to go to extra time before defeating Nestlè Flag 5-4.
Darren Brandon bagged a hat-trick and Gary Newton a brace, although they were indebted to goalkeeper Mark Phillips for a great penalty save in normal time.
York FA Sunday Morning Junior Cup holders Acomb WMC had no problem proceeding in the competition with a 9-3 victory against new team Dinamo Megahorse.
They took the lead as early as the second minute and their goals came from Danny Gray (4), Matthew Chipchase (2), Steve Cross (2) and Anthony Evans.
End-to-end play, and 14 goals, was the order of the day between Hemingbrough and Dunnington, with Hemingbrough winning 8-6 after extra time.
A strange decision by Dunnington to change their goalkeeper for the extra time period appeared to help in their downfall.
Guy May and Luke Zacharenco hit hat-tricks for Hemingbrough and Matthew Clarke and Liam Hallam also netted, while for Dunnington there was a hat-trick from Mark Andrews with Nick Robinson, Joseph Wains and John Womold also on target.
Leeman United were trailing 4-3 against Station FC with just a minute of normal time remaining when Jimmy Clamp scored to force them into extra time.
It was the same player who clinched the game for Leeman with a great solo goal in the second period of extra time.
The earlier goals for Leeman were netted by Jamie Moore (2) and Jamie Dawes as Leeman ran out 5-4 winners.
