CUP specialists Skelton have lifted the Ian’s Cars of Barlby York Sunday Morning Football League Senior Challenge Trophy.
Skelton, who had already bagged the York FA Sunday Morning Senior Cup, added the prize to their haul with a 2-1 victory over Wanderers in the final at New Earswick.
Wanderers created all the early chances and opened the scoring after only four minutes when their captain Gary Newton drilled home a close range effort.
Skelton gradually got back in the game and were twice denied an equaliser by Wanderers ’keeper Mike Clancey. He pulled off two great one-on-one saves, first from Chris Holmes and then Ben Janes.
However, Skelton kept up the pressure and on 40 minutes Janes was put through again and brought down by Clancey.
Neale Holmes converted the penalty.
The game looked to be heading towards extra time due to a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping, but with a minute left on the clock Holmes scored his second goal to win the cup for Skelton.
Acomb WMC completed a league and cup double after beating York St John University 3-2 in the final of the Ian’s Cars of Barlby Junior Challenge Trophy.
St John created a host of early chances, the closest a volley from Michael Warnes that hit the bar.
Against the run of play, Acomb made it 1-0 when a cross from Anthony Evans was headed in by Michael O’Shaughnessy.
St John went close to equalising when a header from Jason Chappelhow struck a post. On the half hour, Michael Warnes broke through two tackles and lobbed the ’keeper to make it 1-1.
Warnes struck again minutes later to put St John 2-1 up.
Acomb hit back with a goal from Danny Gray to make it 2-2 at the break and, 11 minutes into the second period, Gray made it 3-2 from the spot after being brought down in the box.
Man of the match Lee Knaggs then kept St John at bay.
