FORMER Copmanthorpe footballer Lucy Staniforth set up England Women’s first goal in the Under-20 World Cup.
Staniforth, on as a sixth-minute substitute for injured Everton midfielder Jessica Holbrook, provided the inswinging corner that saw Kerys Harrop head the Three Lionesses in front on the stroke of half-time during their opening group game against Nigeria.
The African team fought back to clinch a 1-1 draw, however, following Desire Oparanozie’s equaliser on the hour.
Staniforth, 17, is the daughter of former York City striker Gordon and plays for Sunderland Ladies.
England’s next game in the Germany-hosted tournament is against Mexico tomorrow.
