WAYNE Halligan’s brace could not prevent York Corinthians missing out on a piece of veteran silverware.
The efforts of Halligan proved in vain as Harrogate Railway’s Sherwood over-35s ran out 3-2 winners in the York Corinthians Charity League Division Two Cup final at Boroughbridge FC.
Halligan both opened and closed the scoring in the match, netting the first after his penalty had been saved.
In beating York, Sherwood also completed a league and cup double.
The first division title, meanwhile, was decided when a Harrogate team, featuring former Everton and Manchester City winger Peter Beagrie, beat Boroughbridge 6-2.
Having been formed seven years ago, the veteran league has grown from the original four teams to 13 split into two divisions, with clubs ranging from Ilkley to York and Boroughbridge down to Selby.
The York Corinthian Charity, has been running since 1994 after being launched by All Saints’ school-teacher Vic Florey.
It aims to raise money for the benefit of children in Africa through a number of sponsored events and from the proceeds of the two York Corinthians veteran teams that play on Sundays at Sim Balk Lane.
Recently, donations have been made to assist a number of York school ventures to Africa, such as a trip by Manor pupils to Malawi.
