TWO second half goals from Lee Powell ensured Acomb Celtic claimed the tenth annual Keith Walwyn Tournament at Huntington School.

Celtic beat defending champions Losequest 2-1 in the final, with Powell’s two excellent strikes – the first a smash into the bottom corner and the second drilled home following a long run – helping his side overcome a half-time deficit.

The two sides had met in the group stages, when Losequest won 1-0, and last year’s winners had not conceded a goal in the tournament before Powell did the damage when it mattered.

Acomb Celtic’s only goals conceded were also against Losequest as the two teams dominated the competition, which saw 12 outfits battle it out on Saturday.

Gareth Hirst claimed the top scorer’s prize, his tally of seven goals achieved in one match.

The tournament honours the legendary Minstermen marksman, who died in 2003 aged only 47.

It has raised more than £10,000 during its decade with money split between various York City causes, including player sponsorship, the Supporters’ Trust, the Youth Team Fund, and, at the request of Walwyn’s wife Liz, the Cardiology Endowment Fund at Blackpool Hospital.
