Richard Fahey, whose Garswood enhanced his claims for the 2,000 Guineas when winning impressively at Newmarket last week, takes the wraps off a horse at Epsom tomorrow with a different Classic on his agenda.
Gabrial’s Kaka, who was unbeaten in two runs as a juvenile, lines up in the Investec Derby Trial with Paul Hanagan in the saddle.
Although a slow-maturing horse last year, Gabrial’s Kaka won at Chester on his debut and followed up on this course, each time looking like a horse with plenty more to offer.
His rating suggests he may have something to find with some of his rivals tomorrow, but Gabrial’s Kaka comes from a stable in excellent form and is a well regarded horse with the scope for considerable improvement. He is not to be underestimated.
Fahey saddles two in the Investec Property Investments City And Surburban Handicap, Area Fifty One, who is making his seasonal debut, and Lady Loch, who recently scored on her first outing of the campaign at Pontefract.
There promises to be precious little between the pair, but the race fit Lady Loch, who figures at the foot of the handicap, may have the edge in the hands of Paddy Mathers.
Also worth noting at Epsom are the speedy Sacrosanctus (2.20), a previous course winner, who goes for the opening five furlong handicap, which his trainer Scott Dixon won last year with Cadeaux Pearl, and Beyond Conceit (2.50), who shaped well to finish second to Ingleby Spirit at Doncaster on his reappearance. He should strip fitter this time.
At Catterick, Thrust Control promises to be hard to beat in the opening racinguk.com Apprentice Handicap.
Tracy Waggott’s gelding was a ready winner at Beverley last week and turns out quickly under George Chaloner, who has had a couple of useful winners lately.
Newmarket trainer David Elsworth only rarely sends runners to Catterick and it may be significant that he is sending Last Hooray north in search of her first career success.
The lightly-raced three-year-old shaped well on her recent reappearance at Leicester to finish second. The opposition here does not look too testing and she may be the one to be on in the Go Racing In Yorkshire Maiden Stakes.
The nap vote is awarded to King Kurt in the 2013 Catterick Twelve Furlong Series Handicap (qualifier).
The five-year-old finished a good second to Going Grey at Newcastle last week. This longer trip will suit him better and he is taken to go one better under Phil Makin.
Gabrial The Master (3.40), who took a hefty bump when third at Beverley last week, and the promising Marcus Caesar (5.15) are also worthy of attention.
