Malton jockey Tony Hamilton, set to have his first Classic ride at Newmarket this weekend, can get in the winning mood at Redcar tomorrow.

He teams up in the opening juvenile event with Princess Pheeny for Richard Fahey, who is preparing to give Hamilton the leg up on Garswood in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas on Saturday.

Hamilton won last month’s European Free Handicap on the same course aboard Garswood, who is now set to take on Dawn Approach and Toronado, jointly unbeaten in ten races, in a bid to become only the third Yorkshire-trained 2,000 Guineas winner in more than a century.

Princess Pheeny is not in the same sort of league as Garswood, but then she will not need to be to open her winning account at the second time of asking.

On her debut at Newcastle last month, she made a bright start to her career by finishing a neck second to Pigeon Pie.

Unless any of the newcomers in tomorrow’s race are any great shakes, she has an excellent chance of going one better.

The Enjoy Redcar Hospitality Selling Stakes looks a good option for Haajes to win for Paul Midgley and Shirley Teasdale.

The nine-year-old may be in the autumn of his career, but he still retains a fair amount of ability as he showed when staying on into fourth place in an apprentices’ handicap at Ripon on his latest start. He is a previous course and distance winner.

David Nicholls has a couple of good chances on the Redcar card. Summerinthecity should go well in the Redcar Racecourse Conference & Wedding Venue Handicap over seven furlongs.

The Sessay gelding ran a blinder at Haydock last week to finish a close-up second and looks to be coming to hand. Franny Norton has the mount.

Hamoody can complete the Nicholls double in the claimer.

The veteran has been in fine form all winter and has won his last two starts on the all-weather.

The latest qualifier for Redcar’s Straight Mile Championship has been divided into two races at the end of the card and interest should be paid to The Codger (5.35), who contests the second of them.

Unraced last year, David O’Meara’s charge has shown a glimpse of ability in three races since in maiden company. He is now into a handicap off a modest mark of 57 and is also upped in trip from six furlongs to a mile. He should not be underestimated.

At Lingfield, Paul Hanagan can land a couple of races for his boss, Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum.

In the Aurora Fireworks Maiden Stakes, he rides the Brian Meehan-trained Arbaah, who shaped with distinct promise when beaten only three lengths into fifth place in a maiden at Newbury a fortnight ago. She is probably capable of better with that first outing of the season under her belt.

Hanagan will also be aboard Khobaraa for John Gosden in the Derby Trial Coming Soon Handicap.

Winner of her only race as a juvenile at Kempton in December, this daughter of Invincible Spirit looks to be on a workable opening mark for her handicap bow. She deserves respect.

Also worth noting are the fit and consistent Tornado Force (3.50) and last month’s Kempton winner Amber Heights (4.20), whose 3lb rise has been snuffed out and more by apprentice Amy Scott’s 5lb allowance.
