Mikel Delzangles, whose first job in racing was pupil- assistant to the late, great Jimmy FitzGerald at Norton Grange in the early 1990s, has made a huge success of training racehorses in France and his prowess can be further underlined at Newmarket tomorrow.

Delzangles saddles What A Name in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas and this talented filly is fancied to come out on top, just as Makfi did for Delzangles in the 2,000 Guineas in 2010.

The trainer, who can also claim notable wins at Royal Ascot and in the Melbourne Cup in Australia, has carefully plotted What A Name at this prestigious target.

She warmed up with a win in the Prix Imprudence at Maisons-Laffitte last month, a race which which is a traditional stepping-stone to the 1,000 Guineas for fillies trained on the opposite side of the Channel. The fact that she came through that ‘trial’ in comfortable style, adding to her two juvenile successes, was nothing if not encouraging.

The opposition to What A Name tomorrow is pretty deep and includes Sir Henry Cecil’s Hot Snap, who came right to the fore of the ante-post betting when impressively winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket last month. Charlie Hills has a huge opinion of Just The Judge, unraced this season, but a useful winner of the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket last autumn. Aidan O’Brien’s Moth, a winner at the Curragh on her reappearance, also commands plenty of respect.

But What A Name is expected to have what it takes to come out on top and provide Delzangles with another major triumph.

Mark Johnston’s Fennell Bay (2.05), who overcame trouble in running to win at Beverley on his latest start, and the classy Shirocco Star (2.35), placed in two fillies’ Classics as well as in Group 2 company last season, are two others to consider on the second day of the Guineas meeting.

Away from Newmarket, more bread and butter fare will be served at Hamilton, where the £15,000 totepool Tangerine Trees Conditions Stakes takes pride of place.

The race, named after the Bryan Smart-trained sprinter, a former course specialist who went on to win the Prix de l’Abbeye, has attracted a useful field and Smoothtalkinrascal is awarded the nap vote to secure the spoils for David O’Meara and apprentice David Bergin.

A decent juvenile last season when trained by Brian Meehan, the three-year-old made a winning debut for O’Meara at Leicester before an unlucky defeat at Sandown, where he failed by three-parts of a length after not finding daylight until much too late. This race offers compensation.

The promising Frasers Hill (4.35) should go well for Newmarket trainer Roger Varian, while Norton handler John Quinn and Westow-based Paul Midgley have good prospects of figuring on the scoresheet with O Ma Lad (4.00) and Choc’a’moca (5.45) respectively.
