Sam James, a talented new riding recruit to David O’Meara’s Nawton stable, can further underline the potential of his move to North Yorkshire at Wolverhampton this afternoon.
The 3lb claimer, previously based in Ireland, where he rode more than 70 winners attached to the Kevin Prendergast stable, has quickly rattled up three successes since transferring to England in search of increased opportunities.
One of those wins was achieved on Frontier Fighter and James is set to team up again with the O’Meara-trained gelding in today’s Ladbrokes Handicap.
Front-running tactics seemed to suit the six-year-old at Southwell on his latest start and it is likely that James will again bid to lead from pillar to post this afternoon.
With a 6lb penalty, Frontier Fighter has more on his plate, but this course and distance winner should take plenty of beating.
Jamie Spencer could prove a jockey to follow at Wolverhampton, where he has a couple of good chances, including aboard the Richard Fahey-trained Our Gabrial in the 32Red Handicap, The three-year-old has racked up a sequence of placed efforts and the fitting of first-time blinkers may enable him to get his head in front on this occasion.
Spencer can also score on Captain Morley in the 32Red.com Maiden Stakes.
Trained by David Simcock at Newmarket, Captain Morley chased home Dutch Rifle in a maiden on this track just over two weeks ago. He may not have to improve much to go one better Luke Morris, one of the busiest jockeys around, also has double prospects on Daneglow and Spreadable.
Trained by Mike Murphy, who does well with his small string, Daneglow appreciated Morris’ more patient tactics when winning on this course last month.
It would be no surprise to see her follow up and she is awarded the nap vote.
Spreadable goes for the 32Red Casino Handicap, a race which will take little winning. Nick Littmoden’s charge has shown enough on his last two starts on this course, which included a short-head defeat, to suggest he is capable of breaking his duck.
Trainer Tony Carroll saddles four of the eight runners in the Coral App Download From The App Store Handicap.
His best chance of success looks likely to come from Easydoesit, the mount of Graham Lee, who finished second in handicap company here last week.
At Plumpton, the in-form combination of Venetia Williams and Aidan Coleman is poised to enjoy another lucrative afternoon.
They can score with Uhlan Bute (1.00), who finished second at Leicester last time, and also Toubeera (2.30), who ran a sound race in hot company behind Carol’s Spirit at Newbury last month.
Williams and Coleman also boast strong claims with handicap chaser Saroque (3.00), a Newbury winner a couple of weeks ago and lightly raced this season.
