VIVA Ronaldo (7-4) showed his promise when securing his first racecourse victory in the HSS Hire Maiden Stakes at York Racecourse.

Richard Fahey's two-year-old had narrowly missed out on Knavesmire last month when narrowly beaten by Thunderous Mood in the Yorkshire Regiment Maiden Stakes.

This time, the Musley Bank trainer's colt took the running from a very early stage, but looked to have found one too good once again when he was headed at the two furlong pole by eventual third-placed finisher Carnaby Haggerston (9-2).

But, on his third start, Viva Ronaldo dug deep and was driven by Fahey's stable jockey Paul Hanagan to hit the front again at the final furlong - almost cruising to a length and a half win in the five furlong contest from Every Second (6-4 fav).

Fahey, who bought the horse at the Kempton Breeze-Up Sales from Mockleshill Stud chief Willie Browne, said: "He's got some speed. I would consider stepping him up to six furlongs."

It was a tremendous afternoon for former Malton apprentice Jimmy Quinn, who rode a superb hat-trick.

Four Miracles (8-1) produced a tidy display to win the feature £17,000 HSS Hire Stakes. Numero Due had made most of the running but faded at the business end with Four Miracles still full of running.

He flew home half-a-length ahead of Directa's Digger (5-1) and clear of Tim Easterby's Bollin Felix (3-1).

Sohraab (14-1) was a classy winner of the hss.com Stakes. Stolt, trained by Flaxton handler Noel Wilson, was in front for much of the contest but, as the fast finishers swallowed him up close to the winning post, Quinn raced down the outside to drive for the line a length ahead of Fahey's Total Impact (4-1 jt fav).

Earlier, Goodbye Mr Bond (6-1) had given Quinn his first success in the First TransPennine Express Stakes - flashing past Just Bond (25-1) and Nevada Desert (9-1) to win the one mile, one furlong contest.

It meant Quinn, who learned his trade at Pat Rohan's Grove Cottage Yard in Norton in the early 80s, rode a 944-1 three-timer.

"Some days you can win two or three, some days it can all go wrong," said Quinn, who has a good chance at Royal Ascot on Tuesday with Nunthorpe winner Kingsgate Native in the King's Stand Stakes. "I look forward to every day. But I'm looking forward to Tuesday more than most."

Sporting Gesture, on his 34th run at York for Sheriff Hutton trainer Mick Easterby, was mugged on the line in the final Collingwood Cleaning Services Apprentice Stakes.

The old stager took the lead at three furlongs and stayed on, but the 11-year-old was unable to hold off Naughty Thoughts (8-1).
