Top international golfer Lee Westwood will be aiming for a hole in one on the Westwood course at Beverley this afternoon.

Hoof It, trained at Sheriff Hutton by the shrewd Mick Easterby, is owned by Westwood in partnership with his manager, Chubby Chandler.

A winner at Newcastle last season on the third of his three runs, Hoof It has had one outing so far this term, at Beverley last month when he faded in the closing stages to finish eighth over an extended seven furlongs.

That distance may have been too far for Hoof It, who reverts to five furlongs this afternoon in the Mayday Raceday Handicap.

With Phil Makin in the saddle, he can make Westwood’s day.

Danehillsundance is another horse to keep on the right side of in the Garden Fete In The Course Enclosure Handicap.

Trained by David Brown, Danehillsundance met trouble in running at Musselburgh last Friday when finishing a close up fifth to Sand Tiger.

Provided he gains a clear passage this time, Danehillsundance, a course and distance winner last season, should go well.

Sixties Rock has strong claims in the White Rabbit Handicap.

Jeremy Glover’s gelding was significantly well backed before winning at Catterick on his latest outing. There is probably more to come from him.

Also worth noting today are the promising Amethyst Dawn (3.20), trained by the in-form Tim Easterby, and Ollie Pears’ consistent Sir George (4.50).

At Newcastle tomorrow, Taborcillo is napped to follow up his recent Catterick win in the John Burdon Memorial Handicap.

The three-year-old’s recent success was achieved over five furlongs and tomorrow’s extra furlong should suit David Barron’s charge even better. He is fancied to defy a 6lb rise in the ratings.

Shekan Star has escaped a penalty for the Border Minstrel Handicap.

Her course victory last week was achieved in an apprentices’ race, meaning that she is not penalised for tomorrow’s target in an ‘open’ contest.

Matthew Lawson again takes the mount on Keith Reveley’s mare.

* Mikel Delzangles is planning a return trip to Britain with Makfi after his shock 33-1 win in the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Delzangles, winning his first Classic, said: “I hoped he would run very well as he was in great form and won his trial.”

Henry Cecil caused a major upset in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas yesterday when Jacqueline Quest pipped Special Duty in a thrilling climax.
