No rest for the wicked – or for record-breaking champion jockeys.
Tony McCoy, jumping’s legendary rider, makes the journey to Britain’s most northerly course tomorrow and can complete a Perth treble for Irish trainer Gordon Elliott.
Elliott is a frequent visitor to Perth and, in securing the services of McCoy for most of his runners on the card, he will be a happy man.
He will, of course, be happier still to get his name on the scoreboard and that looks very likely, not least in the opening novices’ hurdle, courtesy of Nedzer’s Return.
This prolific winner scored twice in three days at this course last month. With McCoy on board, a Perth hat-trick is looking a distinct possibility.
In the novices’ handicap hurdle, Elliott and McCoy can follow up with Cabernet Sauvignon, who went down by only half a length on his latest outing at Limerick.
He looks a winner waiting to happen and is awarded the nap vote.
Mickey Monk can be another winner for Elliott and McCoy in the handicap hurdle. The five-year-old ran a creditable race to finish third at Down Royal on his latest start and looks capable of winning a modest race such as this.
Tomorrow’s highlight is the £20,000 Perth Gold Cup, in which McCoy rides Hoopy for Elliott. The gelding deserves respect, but Sir Bathwick, trained by David Pipe, makes more appeal.
A good winner at Wincanton on his latest start, this bold front-runner could take plenty of catching. Tom Scudamore takes the mount.
Also worth watching out for are Lucinda Russell’s Phone In (2.45) and Helen Wood (3.15), a Newton Abbot winner last time out.
At Bath, Orange Pip should take plenty of beating in the Bet totepool Handicap over an extended five furlongs.
Peter Makin’s sprinter trotted up at Lingfield last time and, clearly in good heart, is fancied to follow up under former champion jockey Seb Sanders.
