Oneofapear, who made a winning start to the season at Ripon earlier this month, can underline his potential by capturing the £35,000 Zetland Gold Cup at Redcar today on the first of two days’ action on the seaside course.

Trained at Melsonby near Richmond by Alan Swinbank, the lightly-raced four-year-old is described by Swinbank as “one of those laid-back horses who, outside of his work, just eats and sleeps”.

The trainer also sees Oneofapear as an improving sort and it would be no surprise to see him prove capable enough to land this valuable prize following such a pleasing performance on his comeback outing.

Opposition today includes recent winners Cairnsmore and Sweet Lightning, the useful Newmarket raider Forte de Marmi, who only runs if the ground is not too firm, and Richard Fahey’s Albaqaa and Changing The Guard.

It’s not going to be easy for Oneofapear, but this likeable gelding is fancied to come through with flying colours.

Swinbank could be set for a good day. He also saddles the nap selection, Boss’s Destination, in the toteexacta Flexi Betting Handicap.

Although yet to trouble the judge in four starts – three maidens and a handicap – Boss’s Destination shaped well to finish fifth in a warm race at York earlier this month. The best of him is still to come and, on what he has already shown, he is certainly not one to overlook in this ten-furlong contest.

PJ McDonald, rider of Oneofapear, also takes the mount on Boss’s Destination.

David Barron is another trainer who could figure firmly among the winners on a course where he has a good record.

The Maunby handler saddles an interesting newcomer in the opening juvenile race in Heresellie (2.25), while the promising Ezra Church (4.45) lines up, also under Graham Gibbons, in the sprint maiden.

Finally, in the last race, a staying handicap, anyone who believes in lightning striking in the same place twice ought to look no further than Zefooha. Trained by Tim Walford at Sheriff Hutton, the six-year-old won the corresponding race 12 months ago.

Racing returns to Redcar tomorrow for very much a bread and butter card.

The nap vote is awarded to Dispol Kylie (4.00) representing Paul Midgley, who ended a frustrating barren spell when Summer Lodge scored for him at Beverley on Saturday.

Dispol Kylie finished a good third to Mey Blossom at Newcastle recently and is capable of landing this five furlong dash from the foot of the handicap.

Brian Ellison produced Dream Win (3.30) to land a few nice bets at the latest Redcar meeting and it would be no surprise to see the former Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old follow up off only a 4lb higher mark. Tomorrow’s extra couple of furlongs should not inconvenience the Norton raider.
