GILT EDGE GIRL, winner of her last two starts, looks a sprinter on the up and at York tomorrow she can complete a notable hat-trick in the feature race on the card.

The £65,000 Cuisine De France Summer Stakes, a Group 3 event, is the target for Clive Cox’s progressive four-year-old and, in a race confined to fillies and mares, she is fancied to take plenty of beating under Luke Morris.

Gilt Edge Girl won a Listed race at Bath on her first outing on turf this season and has since landed the Group 3 Ballyogan Stakes at Leopardstown.

The opposition tomorrow is pretty fierce and includes French challenger Letteratura, winner of both her starts this season, previous course winners Swiss Diva and Rose Blossom and last month’s Ayr scorer Tropical Treat.

Gilt Edge Girl, however, is very much a horse in form and is fancied to concede weight all round.

Richard Fahey can get proceedings off to a good start by landing the opening Cakemark Maiden Stakes with Polar Kite.

The son of Marju has shaped well to finish in the money on both his outings to date, and looked slightly unlucky not to come out on top at Musselburgh last month.

The bang-in-form Paul Hanagan has the mount on the nap selection.

The Global Trading UK Responsible Packaging Handicap looks a good opportunity for Smarty Socks to regain the winning thread.

The six-year-old, who did so well for Paul Midgley before showing distinct signs of temperament, is now with David O’Meara.

He has run well on his last two starts, most recently when finishing third in the Carlisle Bell. Provided he does not lose ground at the start, which has proved his tendency on several occasions in the past, Smarty Socks has the ability to win.

Also worth noting on Knavesmire are the potentially smart Emerging Artist (3.55) and the in-form Motrice (4.30), a facile winner at Haydock last time, who looks capable of defying a 6lb penalty against only three rivals.

The final day of Newmarket’s July meeting takes pride of place tomorrow and Starspangledbanner makes plenty of appeal in the showpiece Darley July Cup, which boasts £400,000 in prize money.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, the former Australian superstar looked a class act when putting a class field to the sword in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot last month. He looks capable of following up.

The highly-regarded Ocean Bay (2.00) bids to give trainer John Ryan his second successive Superlative Stakes victory, after Silver Grecian 12 months ago, while the talented but sometimes frustrating Signor Peltro (2.35) has what it takes to win the Bunbury Cup provided everything falls into place for him.
