Canford Cliffs, the most exciting three-year-old miler in Europe, can underline his star quality on the Sussex Downs tomorrow.

The Richard Hannon-trained colt, an outstanding juvenile last season, has won Group 1 races on his last two starts.

Firstly he landed the Irish 2,000 Guineas and last month at Royal Ascot the St James’s Palace Stakes, in both cases exhibiting a hugely impressive finishing burst of speed.

Tomorrow Canford Cliffs travels to Goodwood and is set to contest the showpiece event on day two of the meeting, the £300,000 Sussex Stakes.

Eight runners will face the starter, but none commands the same air of supremacy as Canford Cliffs as he prepares to meet older rivals for the first time in his career.

Regular jockey Richard Hughes will be in the saddle, having done everything in his power to make this particular date.

Two weeks ago, he took time out from riding to ensure that he did not run the risk of breaking any rules, thereby receiving a suspension.

The scene then is set for Canford Cliffs and Hughes to bag their third Group 1 triumph.

Richard Fahey runs his unbeaten dual-winner Waltz Darling in the £80,000 Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes and is hopeful of a good run from his giant-sized colt.

But the Malton raider may have to settle for minor honours behind King Torus, a stable-mate of Canford Cliffs, who will likewise be partnered by Hughes.

Winner of two of his three races, King Torus looked the real deal when bagging the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last time out. That victory has earned him a 3lb penalty, but it may not be enough to prevent him proving superior to his seven rivals, including Waltz Darling.

The Hughes-Hannon bandwagon, represented by a very interesting newcomer in Yashila, a 110,000 gns yearling purchase, in the Markel International Maiden Fillies’ Stakes, is expected to roll on until the very last race, the Sportingbet.com Classified Stakes in which the duo are represented by Oratory.

Fourth at Sandown last time out and previously an excellent second to Distant Memories at York, Oratory can come out on top tomorrow.

Middleham trainer Mark Johnston, who has a brilliant record at Goodwood for this five-day fixture, has good prospects of getting his name on the scoreboard tomorrow.

Prolific winner Lady Eclair should go well for him in the sportingbet.com Goodwood Stakes, while Jutland looks the pick of his runners in the Racing UK Handicap.

Redcar’s eight-race card lacks quality and attractive prize money, but does boast the likelihood of a Henry Cecil-trained winner in On Her Way.

The three-year-old, a Windsor winner last time out, bids to follow up in the John Smith’s Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Stakes (Qualifier).

Tim Easterby’s Hotensia (2.00) is awarded the nap vote, while Graham Gibbons has double prospects on Piddie’s Power (3.10) and the hat-trick seeking Clerical (6.05).
