PAUL HANAGAN’S trophy cabinet will need more reinforcement after he bagged the top jockey prize at the Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival.

The Malton rider, who has already bagged more than 100 victories on his way to leading the jockeys’ championship this season, rode a double at Pontefract on Sunday to claim the prize – and, ironically, rob his employer of the top trainers’ gong.

Hanagan’s victory on Autumn Riches, trained by Mark Johnston, saw the Middleham saddler scoop the prize instead of Musley Bank-based Fahey.

Hanagan rode a pair of winners at York over the two-day Music Showcase meeting, which saw record crowds watch racing and entertainment on Knavesmire.

Some 27,000 turned up for Madness and evening racing on Friday, while the fifth running of the Sky Bet York Stakes the following day delivered a record attendance for the modern era.

A total of 42,586 racegoers cheered home Summit Surge in the Group 2 contest, enjoying a trademark finish ridden by Kieren Fallon.

That huge figure has only been bettered during Royal Ascot at York in 2005.

The Music Showcase weekend formed part of the Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival and attendance figures over the nine days topped 100,000.

That figure was said to be a “sizeable increase” on last year, thanks largely to York’s success.

Simon Channon, chairman of festival organisers Go Racing In Yorkshire, said: “The racing public has embraced the festival and the remarkable increase in the attendance is testament to the support of our sponsors and the enterprise of everyone connected with the sport.”

James Brennan, York’s head of marketing, said: “It is a chance for the eight Flat courses to come together and each of them get a little bit more because of it.

“We would have had a big day irrespective, but the festival has to be a good thing for showcasing racing as a whole.”

On York’s crowd figures, he added: “We have had a great run with the weather and there is something in the combination of that and the quality of the action that we are putting on at the track.”
